ESSAY COMPETITION

SymBion ‘09 Essay Competition

This SymBion ‘09 Essay Competition is organized by the Chemical Engineering Society in collaboration with the Faculty of Chemical & Natural Resources Engineering, and Department of Student Affairs & Alumni, Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The event aims to promote and increase interest among school students on biotechnology.


Theme

The theme of the essay competition is “Malaysia’s Future in Biotechnology”. For further details on the theme, you may visit the following websites:

Eligibility Criteria

  1. participants must be 13-15 (category B) and 16-17 (category A) years of age.
  2. The competition is open to all school students from Malaysia.
  3. Each entry must be sponsored by a teacher, parent or guardian, or other adult mentor associated with the students's education.This means that a responsible adult must review and approve the student's entry before it is submitted to the Secretariat of SymBion '09. The adult should also comfirm that the student did the research and writing themselves.
  4. Students should consult their English teacher to make sure their entries are well written and references are noted appropriately.  


Submission Requirements
  1. Title page listing: Should list essay topic, student's name, student's age, school's name, teacher's name, complete mailing adress of school and complete email and phone contact information of student and teacher.
  2. All papers must be submitted digitally as MS word or Adobe PDF documents.
  3. Individual entries: Entries should be not more than 500 words, typed, double-spaced, 12-pt. font,one-side only. The 500 words limit requirement excludes title page. All pages should be numbered in the lower right-hand corner.  
  4. Digital copy of file-size 10 megabytes or less should be sent via e-mail attachment to symbion09@yahoo.com Subject line: Symbion '09 Essay Competition.
  5. please copy the informtaion from your title page into the e-mail message.

Attached; your essay attached as .doc or .PDF only 

Body of message: Copy and paste your title page information into the body of the e-mail. Do not put the essay itself into the body of the e-mail.

For entries that exceed 10-megabytes file size, send the complete entry saved as .PDF on CD, to arrive not later than the due date to:

Closing Date for Submission

Entry should be submitted to the SymBion ‘09 Organizing Committee by 3rd April 2009.


Adjudication

Adjudication will be conducted by the SymBion ’09 Essay Competition Panel. The submissions will be judged on the basis of:

  1. Informed content
  2. Captivating and inspirational essay
  3. Organization and grammar of the essay
  4. Relevance to the competition’s theme

The decisions of the panel will be final.


Prize and Certificate of Merit

The prizes are as follows:

Category A (16-17 years of age)

  1. First Prize Winner : RM 150.00 and a Certificate of Merit
  2. 1sr Runner Up Winner : RM 100.00 and a Certificate of Merit
  3. 2nd Runner Up Winner : RM 80.00 and a Certificate of Merit

Category B (13 – 15 years of age)

  1. First Prize Winner : RM 120.00 and a Certificate of Merit
  2. 1sr Runner Up Winner : RM 70.00 and a Certificate of Merit
  3. 2nd Runner Up Winner : RM 50.00 and a Certificate of Merit


Handling of the Entries and Intellectual Property

Entries will not be returned. All entries shall remain the property and copyright of SymBion ‘09 Organizing Committee, and could be used or reproduced by the SymBion ‘09 Organizing Committee for any purposes as deemed appropriate.
